Vanish Carpet Cleaner Powder Review – Does It Work?

If your carpets are looking tired and grubby, you might have wondered whether Vanish carpet cleaning powder is the solution. I decided to put it to the test on my own hallway carpet with the help of Henry Hoover. Here’s how it went…

Step 1: Preparing the Carpet

The instructions say to vacuum first, which makes perfect sense. So I gave the test area a good once-over with Henry before applying the powder.

Step 2: Applying the Powder

  • Shake the packet (warning: not very well sealed — I ended up covered in it).

  • Sprinkle the powder evenly across the carpet.

  • Use a brush to spread it out. It doesn’t really scrub; it’s more about even coverage.

Once applied, the instructions say to leave it for 20 minutes — which is the easiest part of the process!

Step 3: The Smell

The packet suggests leaving a window open. I expected a fresh fragrance, but honestly, the smell was pretty underwhelming. If anything, it was faint and not especially pleasant. Definitely not the “just cleaned” scent I hoped for.

Step 4: The Packaging

Here’s where things really went downhill. The bag design is terrible:

  • You can’t reseal it after opening.

  • Powder leaks everywhere when you try to store it.

  • It feels like a step backwards compared to products like Shake ’n Vac that come in resealable canisters.

Every time I moved the bag, it left a trail of powder — not ideal for something meant to clean your carpets.

Step 5: The Results

After 20 minutes, I vacuumed the powder up and checked the results.

  • Before: dull, worn carpet with clear foot traffic marks.

  • After: … not much different, if I’m honest.

Even side by side, I struggled to see an improvement. And without a strong fresh scent to make up for it, the product just didn’t deliver for me.

Final Verdict

I really wanted this to work, but the reality is:

  • The packaging is messy.

  • The fragrance is weak.

  • The cleaning results were minimal, at best.

So, would I recommend Vanish carpet cleaning powder? Personally, no. I’d stick to a proper carpet shampoo or extraction clean if you want real results.
