Vanish Carpet Cleaner Powder Review – Does It Work?

Does Vanish Carpet Cleaning Powder Actually Work? I Tested It With Henry Hoover

If your carpets are looking tired and grubby, you might have wondered whether Vanish carpet cleaning powder is the solution.

I decided to put it to the test on my own hallway carpet with the help of Henry Hoover.

Here’s how it went…

Step 1 – Preparing The Carpet

The instructions say to vacuum first, which makes perfect sense.

So I gave the test area a good once-over with Henry before applying the powder.

Removing loose dirt first should, in theory, help the powder work more effectively on the carpet fibres themselves.

Step 2 – Applying The Powder

  • Shake the packet first (although be warned… it’s not very well sealed)
  • Sprinkle the powder evenly across the carpet
  • Use a brush to spread it around evenly

It doesn’t really scrub deeply into the carpet. It’s more about creating an even layer across the surface.

Once applied, the instructions say to leave it for around 20 minutes before vacuuming.

Honestly, that was probably the easiest part of the whole process.

The Packaging Is A Mess

This was probably my biggest issue with the product.

The bag design is genuinely frustrating.

  • You can’t reseal it properly
  • Powder leaks everywhere
  • Every time you move the bag, more spills out

It actually feels like a backwards step compared to older carpet fresheners like Shake ’n Vac, which came in proper resealable tubs.

For something designed to clean carpets, it creates a surprising amount of mess around the house.

The Smell Was Underwhelming

The instructions suggest opening a window while using it.

I expected a strong “fresh carpet” smell afterward.

But honestly?

The fragrance was extremely weak.

And not especially pleasant either.

It definitely didn’t leave that satisfying “just professionally cleaned” feeling I was hoping for.

Step 3 – Vacuuming It Up

After leaving the powder down for 20 minutes, I vacuumed everything back up using Henry.

Henry handled the powder perfectly fine.

But then came the important part…

The Actual Results

Before:

  • Dull hallway carpet
  • Visible foot traffic marks
  • Tired-looking fibres

After?

Honestly… not much different.

Even side by side, I struggled to see any real improvement in the carpet.

And because the smell wasn’t especially fresh either, there just wasn’t much payoff for the effort or mess involved.

Final Verdict

I genuinely wanted this to work, because the idea is appealing:

  • No carpet cleaning machine needed
  • Quick application
  • Easy refresh between deep cleans

But in reality:

  • The packaging is messy
  • The fragrance is weak
  • The cleaning results were minimal

So personally?

I wouldn’t recommend it.

If your carpets genuinely need freshening up, I’d honestly stick to:

  • A proper carpet shampoo machine
  • A wet extraction clean
  • Or a professional carpet cleaner

The results are usually night and day compared to carpet powders like this.
